ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY TESTING

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) describes the ability of electronic equipment to operate properly in an electromagnetic environment without causing electromagnetic interference themselves. EMC covers two important areas:

  • the source of electromagnetic interference
  • the satisfactory function in its electromagnetic environment.

Causes of interference can include, for example, switching operations, unwanted feedback, thermal overload, technical defects such as short circuits or cable breaks, or software errors. A typical feature of electromagnetic interference is that it acts on equipment from the outside. Another characteristic is that such disturbances do not necessarily occur continuously or reproducibly. This is a reason for sometimes complex EMC tests. The “satisfactory function” of equipment is very much related to the concept of quality. It is part of the manufacturer's assurance of a defined functionality of a product. This defined functionality must be guaranteed. EMC is therefore a topic of Quality Management and Functional Safety of a product.

WHY DOES MBDA RUN AN EMC LAB?

MBDA carries out measurements during development - EMC pre-compliance tests - and thus increases the maturity level of test objects and products. In the context of the CE Declaration of Conformity, MBDA carries out the required EMC tests itself for in-house developments and special equipment.
MBDA also offers EMC consulting and measurement services to customers.
